# RZ-Account
A valid RZ-Account is a necessity for access to Regensburg University IT
services. An ordinary RZ-Account includes:
* Unique user ID (three characters and five digits, e.g., vip12345)
* Password
* E-mail account
* Digital account for paid services including printing at public printers
* Storage space at file servers
For more information about the RZ-Account visit [https://www.uni-regensburg.de/en/computer-centre/it-services/general-services/manage-account](https://www.uni-regensburg.de/en/computer-centre/it-services/general-services/manage-account).
## Service Portal
The service portal is an online service that allows you to manage the RZ-Account,
change the current password, manage the printing account, and browse through
all software and services provided by the RZ.
Link to the service portal: [https://serviceportal.ur.de](https://serviceportal.ur.de)
## Password Management
For password management visit the service portal at https://serviceportal.ur.de.
Log in with your RZ-Account user ID and password.
The RZ-Account password expires after 365 days.
Please note: Some e-mail clients query the RZ e-mail servers at high
frequency. This can lead to blocking of your e-mail access
if an outdated, and therefore invalid, password is used.
If you get locked out of your account, contact [admins.fids@ur.de](mailto:admins.fids@ur.de).
## E-Mails
The UR uses GroupWise for e-mail services.
There is a web interface available for online e-mail management
at [https://gw.ur.de](https://gw.ur.de).
There is a dedicated e-mail client for Windows called *GroupWise*, which is
pre-installed on all Windows machines from the university.
For more information about e-mails at the UR visit https://www.uni-regensburg.de/en/computer-centre/it-services/e-mail-collaboration/e-mail-calendar
Use the chatbot or Help & Support to get more information interactively, e.g.,
for configuration of e-mail clients such as Thunderbird and Apple Mail.
## RZ-Account Creation
Typically, new RZ-Accounts are automatically created, for instance, during student enrollment or at the start of employment for staff members.
However, certain circumstances necessitate the manual creation of an RZ-Account.
### New Team Members
Long-term guests associated with a chair or situations where a new employee needs an account in advance, for example, to request a transponder.
**In these cases, the secretariats can contact us to create a new account.**
Download English PDF: [rz-account-request.pdf](media/rz-account-request.pdf)
Download German PDF: [rz-account-beantragen.pdf](media/rz-account-beantragen.pdf)
### Guest Accounts
An online form is available for account requests, which must be filled out by the applicant.
The RZ account is valid for 6 months and has limited access to services, e.g., there is no e-mail account at UR associated with this type of RZ account. Note that account creation takes some time due to administrative overhead. The applicant will receive a confirmation e-mail at the address supplied in the online form.
Guest accounts can be used to participate in a course or event that uses the IT infrastructure of UR or to access team storage.
Many other institutions that also use Shibboleth, such as **OTH Regensburg**, can request a Guest RZ account via self-service: [https://wgm.app.uni-regensburg.de/extedu.phtml](https://wgm.app.uni-regensburg.de/extedu.phtml)
It is also possible to create guest accounts for institutions that are not explicitly named [here](https://wgm.app.uni-regensburg.de/extedu.phtml). Please contact the admins beforehand.
# WiFi
The UR offers several options for WiFi access.
## eduroam
eduroam provides simple, easy, and secure connectivity from thousands of hotspots across more than 100 countries.

## BayernWLAN
BayernWLAN is a public network of WiFi hotspots. BayernWLAN is
also available at the UR. Anyone can surf the internet 24/7 without registering or volume limits.
Every hotspot is called
*@BayernWLAN*. Registration, passwords or login details are not required. All
hotspots are connected to the internet at a speed of up to 1 GBit/s.
After connecting to the SSID *BayernWLAN* you will be shown a landing page in
your web browser. After accepting the Terms and Conditions, you will be able to connect to the internet.
**Please note: On macOS Safari, the landing page is bugged, and it is not possible to click on the "Connect" button.**
As a workaround, you can use Firefox to access the landing page directly, or click on "Impressum" in the pop-up window and select "Open in Safari" to access the landing page in Safari. In both Firefox and Safari, the "Connect" button will work correctly.
# Virtual Private Network (VPN)

# Operating Systems
## Windows
New laptops from the RZ come pre-installed with Windows 11, which is already configured for use at the university.
### First Time Windows Login
* Check if you have a working internet connection.
* Select **“Other User”** (or “Anderer Benutzer” in German) at the login screen.

* Use your RZ password in the password field.
### Migration to Windows 11
The RZ is upgrading all Windows devices to Windows 11. All Windows 10 devices must be upgraded until October 2025 if Windows 11 is supported.
## macOS
macOS is only rudimentarily supported by the RZ, and Apple devices do not come pre-installed from the RZ.
Microsoft Defender for Endpoint must be installed on all macOS devices from the university.
Installation guide for *Microsoft Defender for Endpoint* for macOS: [instructions-for-switching-to-defender-on-your-mac.pdf](media/instructions-for-switching-to-defender-on-your-mac.pdf)
We also recommend the installation of *FortiClient*, *M365*, *iPrint*, and
*Zoom*. Installation guides and files are available at
[serviceportal.ur.de](https://serviceportal.uni-regensburg.de).
## Regensburg Linux (ReX)
ReX is a Linux distribution compiled and maintained by the RZ. ReX is based on
Debian 12 Bookworm with the GNOME desktop environment. Log in to ReX with
RZ-Account user ID and password credentials.
A detailed overview of ReX and the Linux infrastructure at the UR in general is
compiled by the Physics Department here:
https://www.uni-regensburg.de/physik/fakultaet/service/it/linux-doku-physik/index.html
Contact the FIDS IT team if you have questions or need support at
[admins.fids@ur.de](mailto:admins.fids@ur.de).
In the following we restrict ourselves to introduce only the basics of ReX.
Plenty of information about Debian Linux in general is available on the
internet.
### Home Directory
The user's home directory is mounted via network
filesystem (NFS), i.e., home is not stored locally on the machine. The NFS mount
of the home directory is available on any machine running ReX. Physically, home
is stored on the RZ storage infrastructure, which provides redundancy and
frequent backups. Due to the limited size of the home directory we do not
recommend using home for large datasets.
The default maximum storage volume available for the home directory is
5120 MB (approximately 5 GB). You can check the details of the storage
consumption using the `quota` command. To check the occupied amount of storage
open a terminal and execute
```console
$ quota -s
Disk quotas for user vip12345:
Filesystem space quota limit grace files quota limit grace
titannfs-staff3:/staff3/informatik/allgemein/vip12345
1437M 5120M 5140M 13258 0 0
```
In this example the user `vip12345` owns 13258 files in the
home directory, which in total occupy 1437 MB of storage space.
**Notes on SSH**
ReX runs an OpenSSH server daemon. Log in to any machine running ReX with your
RZ-Account credentials
```console
$ ssh @host
```
To log in without a password, one can copy the SSH public key to the remote
machine. In this example, we create a key (which should be protected by a
passphrase) and then copy the public key to the remote machine
```console
$ ssh-keygen -t ed25519
$ ssh-copy-id -i @host
```
This must be done only once. Note that on some machines a password is still
necessary for login despite the public key. This is related to the details of
the user authentication process on such machines.
### Local Disk Drives
On some machines, there is at least one local disk drive mounted to the filesystem. The number of drives and their mount points can vary. To check the
mountpoints open a terminal and execute
```console
$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/nvme1n1p2 92G 29G 59G 33% /
/dev/nvme1n1p4 348G 32K 330G 1% /ssd
/dev/nvme0n1p1 496M 38M 459M 8% /boot/efi
...
```
In this example, there is a local SSD partition `/dev/nvme1n1p4` mounted on
the folder `/ssd` in the filesystem.
The capacity of the partition is 330 GB. To check the content of `/ssd` execute
```console
$ ls -l /ssd
total 20
drwx------ 2 root root 16384 4. Jul 16:44 lost+found
drwxr-xr-x 2 vip12345 ... 4096 4. Jul 17:07 vip12345
```
In this example there is a folder `vip12345` available, which can be used by
this user to store data. We recommend using folders named after your RZ-Account
user ID for storing large datasets.
Note that here the user's folder is readable by everyone who has access
to the machine. Use the `chmod` cli command to manage access permissions. Note further
that typically there is no redundancy or backup of local drives.
### Project Storage
For options on how to access project storage using ReX, contact the FIDS IT team at [admins.fids@ur.de](mailto:admins.fids@ur.de).
### Software
For an overview of the software available using ReX, refer to
https://www.uni-regensburg.de/physik/fakultaet/service/it/linux-doku-physik/index.html.
Additional software can be enabled using the `en` script. Open a terminal and
execute (pressing `q` will lead to the software selection option):
```console
$ en
1 Anaconda3-2024.02-1 Anaconda3 2024.02
2 LITBioinfo new: python3
3 R-2.11.1 R 2.11.1 und Bioconductor
4 R-3.0.1 R 3.0.1 und Bioconductor
5 R-3.2.2 R 3.2.2, rstudio und Bioconductor
...
```
For instance, selecting Anaconda will enable the conda environment in the
current terminal.
### Language Settings
Log in to ReX. To change the language settings go to
Activities -> Settings -> Region & Language in the GUI and select text
language and keyboard layout of your choice. Note that not all languages
are available by default. Additional language support can only be installed
by IT administrators.
There can be issues with ReX language settings. For instance, the login screen can be in German while the GUI is in English.
# Services from Verwaltung-EDV
The university administration also provides its own IT services, which are outside the scope of the FIDS Admins and the RZ. Therefore, we cannot assist with issues related to the following services.
## SPUR
The campus portal, also called SPUR, hosts the course catalogue at
[https://spur.uni-regensburg.de](https://spur.uni-regensburg.de).
University employees can book seminar rooms and check room reservations.
Unlike students, **university employees do not automatically receive a SPUR account**. A new account must be created by the SPUR administrators. Please check with your secretary on how to gain access to SPUR.
## Flex-Now
This service is for management of grades and exams. It is also accessible through [SPUR](#servicesfromverwaltung-edv/spur).

# Building and Technical Services (GuT)
The main task of the GuT (Gebäude und Technik) is the operation of all building
systems at the university. This primarily includes the maintenance, servicing,
and repair of these systems. **The GuT is not responsible for the IT infrastructure**.
Issues with the FIDS building infrastructure (e.g., doors, windows, heating, electrical)
can be reported online at [https://famosweb.ur.de](https://famosweb.ur.de) or by
e-mail to [Famos.TZ@tz.uni-regensburg.de](mailto:Famos.TZ@tz.uni-regensburg.de).
The GuT is also responsible for the AV equipment (e.g., projectors, displays, speakers) on campus and in the FIDS Building. Issues at the FIDS Building should be reported via e-mail to [Medientechnik.Service@tz.uni-regensburg.de](mailto:Medientechnik.Service@tz.uni-regensburg.de) or [Famos.TZ@tz.uni-regensburg.de](mailto:Famos.TZ@tz.uni-regensburg.de).
In the event of an **urgent** emergency - such as a burst pipe, power outage,
or the failure of critical systems - please report the issue immediately by
phone to the facilities control center at 3333 or +49 941 943-3333.
